IntraOral Massage: An Introduction

If you've never heard of intraoral massage, the idea may strike you as unusual. Massage inside the mouth? Why? How? Well, if you've experienced headaches, jaw tension, or the effects of TMJ disorder, this may be just the solution you've been looking for!

Intraoral massage focuses on the muscles both inside and outside of the mouth a jaw. Certified, educated intraoral practitioners will massage those muscles both from the exterior (the face, scalp, and underside of the chin) and interior (inside the mouth, using gloves). Typically, these massages will also include work on the neck and cervical (upper) spine. Stand-alone intraoral massage may be performed with the client clothed, as the focus is exlusively the head and neck region. Intraoral massage may also be integrated into full-body massage treatments.

In addition to their general massage education and licensing, all intraoral practitioners must undergo specific training in this modality, and must have an intraoral endorsement attached to their state license.
